Cave Mt. Elevation 10,700' Ely, NV. Jan. 2005
After our severe winter of 2004-2005 many of our sites took a beating, this
one was the worst. We'll be repairing this site and will have new pics
showing the upgrade to the ice shield protection so this won't happen
again.
Here's the latest pics after we just got back from this project. Starting from top left to right shows a sequence of the
design, fabrication and installation of this beast.
Steel used ranged from 2x2x5/16 - 3x3x1/4 - 4x4x5/16 and the plate was T6061 3/8" Aluminum plate and supplied by
Bay Shore Metals.
The Ice bridge was decided to be a free float design due to the fairly extensive damage from the initial installation of
black iron angle mounted to the wall of the shelter (which was rusted) and 4 ea. 10 ga. 1" straps that bolted to the
first horizontal girt of the tower. When crushed by the extreme amount of ice, the girt had sustained a good amount
of tweaking thus we were not going to attach this bridge to tower or shelter wall.
The original coax supports were 3/8" S.S. rod and clustered together. This offered no support so we installed the 5/8"
threaded rod trapeze support for a more rigid assembly more suited for the extreme conditions. The GPS antenna
was reinstalled to the A-Frame.
The existing waveguide & coax was dressed in as best as possible due to the original installation.
The ice shield for the generator was repaired using the original grip strut by attaching chokers and forcing back into
level then installing Microflect concerte mounted pipes to support a 4x4x5/16 angle in the middle of the span.
Two new bridge post were installed near the shelter. The pipes are 4' BGL and has over 3200# of concrete w/ a
4x4x5/16 angle attaching the two pipes 3' BGL.
