Slide Mt. Nevada Elevation 9900' approx.
Aug. 2006 - Nov. 2006
I guess three's a charm. After 2 other failed attempts from 2 other contractors, we were finally given the opportunity to fix this
problem for good. The following photos go back to Nov. 2005 to the finished product in Nov. 2006.
15 Sep. 2006
There will be more photo's coming soon as more of this project is completed. Due to high winds for the past 2 days @ Slide Mt. I'm
office bound. New pics will be posted on the 17th of Sep. Winds are supposed to subside over the weekend.
29 Nov. 2005
During a storm we got an emergency call to realign the 12' HP.
3 Jul. 2006
The antenna had failed for a second time due to poor installation of the stiffarm's tieback system or lack thereof. A single 3/8" stainless steel
U-Bolt does not constitute a proper stiffarm anchor point for a 12' HP dish. I was told that this dish was getting ready to meet the same fate as
dish #1 and blow down the mountain but was removed from the tower before it happened. The pics above shows the damage of dish #2.
4 Sep. 2006
Dish #3 being loaded & transported to the site.
Sep. 2006
Hoisting the platform material to the top of the site.
150+ feet from the staging area to the tower & rocky.
We had to build a temporary platform to build out the
new antenna.
Sep. 2006
It's always nice to have a nice flat area to build out a 12' HP antenna but it's not always the case, sometimes you have to make your own.
This is a 8' x 8' platform. At least it's some sort of a working area to build out the antenna.
It'll also be used to platform the old 10' HP MCI dishes too.
They'll be cut up and trolly'd down to the staging area from here.
Sep. 2006
Here's the new antenna & tieback system being trolly'd up the tower. Once it's up there it's a
quick pick down to the platform for final assembly and then straight from the platform, a
pick to the tower leg. Sure does beat lugging this stuff up by hand.
Sep. 2006
Remnants of dish #2 prior to being taken to the scrap yard.
Sep. 2006
Dish #3 on the platform. It'll be flipped over for the radome, feedhorn &
Teglar installation. A new strut bracket will be added to the top of the dish
so that it'll have basically 4 points of stiffarm attachments, top, bottom &
both sides.
Oct. 2006
Getting the new Lorain/Marconi Powerbay to the shelter. The only way to get
this 300lb hunk of electronics to the top easily.
6 Nov. 2006
Finally got the dish assembled. After a weather related incident while
assembling the dish last September we received our replacement parts.
Note: If you ever have to order special component parts from Andrews or
Tessco be prepared to wait a long time. Seems that all they can do is blame
each other for their lack of competence and by closing down the Texas
plant and moving it to Mexico created a major headache. This also affects
the quality as well but that is another story regarding a 10 H.P. antenna a
few weeks ago.
These parts were ordered on 28 September and a 10 -14 day ARO turned
into over 30 days.
At 9900' in November we are pushing our luck w/ accessible weather. We
tried telling Andrews & Tessco this in Mid-October but seems like it fell
upon deaf ears and an indifferent attitude.
Tower's been rigged & 4
parted line is ready to hoist.
Can't hoist it today due to
high winds. We just need
an hour of calm winds to
finish.
Sigh.
7 Nov. 2006
North Lake Tahoe, view of the thick
fog over the lake.
NV. Highway 431 below.
Winds at the site were reaching
40mph gust at the time of the photo.
Can't fly this antenna today.
9 Nov. 2006
Finally, after all these
weeks and some calm
winds we got it off the
assembly platform. Now its
time to raise it gently and
keep it off the rocks.
Randy is dwarfed next to it.
Now from the rocks onto the
foundation & up the tower. The
whole process took about 30
minutes. The winch line was 4
parted too so speed was not a factor
here, just safety & material integrity.
Big Mike on the cathead & little Mike
keepin' steady.
The guys are getting this
dish tight for winter.
This one has 2 outboard
stiffarms 1 bottom strut & 1
inboard stiffarm. It has to
survive 140+ mph winds up
here. Contemplating on a
top strut stiffarm as well.
Little Mike & Randy on the
tower.
Finally time to put this
one to rest. On to the
next one in Ely, NV.
The day after we had finished w/ this site we got a pretty good storm. Click
the link above and note some of the gust that occurred earlier that morning.
10 Nov. 2006
Added the top strut after all. Better safe than sorry.
We did this at the same time as the final path alignment
from here to Alltel's Shurz site.
Photos taken from the adjacent
peak @ Slide Mt.
This site was an old WTCI & MCI
site.
The old 10' HP's are still on the
tower and the 8' HP on the bldg.
These need to be taken down as
well as the old ice shield.
Maybe summer 2007.
