be read here
This photo is from 1993
prior to the repainting.
It was fairly nasty fog at
the bottom.
But not too bad up top.

This was at the old Western Union "Big Hill" tower (near Pollock Pines, CA.) that had it's top half of 150' removed. The
bridge at the top was lowered to the 150' approx. There were 2 10" HP microwave antennas at the very top but I don't
think I have the photos of that. The top sections were removed by the chopper in the photos. The top bridge was
lowered down using a winch on each tower at the bottom.

The following photos were taken in the Spring of 1993 at the VOA (Voice of America) antenna farm in Delano, CA. I was
there to install a cable system spanning the 3 - 400' towers & 4 - 200' towers. The three cables spanning across the tops of
the towers were a support system for maintenance cars that would hoist up personnel & material to maintain the antenna
curtain. These curtains beamed VOA broadcast signals to West Africa and the other to South America. If I remember
correctly the cable was 7/8" & cut/socketed by Lamb cable & wire rope in Bakersfield, CA.
Tower collapse in Apr. 1999. Slide Mt. Reno, NV. Due to faulty welds at
the base flanges & pretty overloaded from what I gathered.

One of my last tower stack jobs w/ Chatco. A full 10 day build for an Andrew 3ST all back to back
185', with a total weight of 31,811 lbs.
From time loading the tower from the N. Merced site, inventory, transport, unload, assemble,
stack, grounding, Ice Bridge & civil.
I had a pretty good crew at the time; Rick Shull, Jim Graber, Chris Heacock, Jason Lee
(greenhorn).
Civil was contracted to an outfit out of Kentucky. They were a really good crew too. Outstanding
concrete/foundation work.
Chatco provided a separate L & A crew for the antenna install. No photos of that install.
